Russia is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.
— Winston Churchill, October 1939

As the above quote implies, perhaps no nation on earth is as misunderstood as Russia. From her earliest roots in Kievan Rus, through decades of Mongol rule, to the return of power via the Rurik Tsars. From the Rise of the Romanovs through the Russian Revolution and the fall of Soviet Union, Russia has long been Churchill's enigma. The goal of this course is to lift the veil on the Russian Bear in hopes of solving Churchill's enigma.

To reach this goal, we offer two one-semester courses. The first is Russian History: 800 to 1900. The second is the Foundations of Contemporary Russia: 1900-Present. Below is the breakdown of the units for each course. Click on each to go to a page devoted to this unit.
