6.6 MIGRATION CAUSES AP WORLD HISTORY MODERN FREEMANPEDIA.jpeg

The last two sections of this unit are focused on Migration. Due to all of the technological innovations seen in UNIT 5, it was now possible for millions of people to emigrate from their country of origin to new places. There are a number of reasons why and how people left and moved. Some were PUSH factors: Famine, war, strife, conflict… Some were PULL factors: jobs, space, opportunity… Below are the causes of the mass migrations of the 1800s.

1. There are two reasons for immigration: PUSH & PULL
2. PUSH FACTORS are ones that force someone to leave their country seeking a better life.
3. The most notable PUSH factor is the Irish Potato Famine or wars like the Taiping Rebellion. These make life unlivable. Time to emigrate.
4. PULL FACTORS are ones that attract someone to come to a new country.
5. The most notable PULL factors are jobs. America (North and South) had plenty of jobs and plenty of space. The effects of this are seen in 6.7.
