Your teacher may have just jumped STRAIGHT into THE GREAT WAR (WWI). But, there were definitely some shifting power dynamics going on prior to 1914. World War I definitely exacerbated the problems being seen around the world (especially in Russia and the Ottoman Empire). But, it’s worth a look at the four hot-spots in the world PRIOR to the GREAT WAR. So, let’s focus on MEXICO, RUSSIA, OTTOMANS, and QING CHINA.

1. Contemporary Period brought BIG changes to some of our oldest empires.
2. The Romanovs were trash and were overthrown by Communists (Lenin and the Bolsheviks)
3. The Manchu/Qing Dynasty were replaced by a Republic after 1911, before falling to Commies after WWII.
4. Mexico finally got rid of Diaz (30 year reign of their “President”) that led to infighting and strife but did get them the Constitution they still use today!
5. The Ottomans picked the wrong side of WWI and afterwards were broken up into Mandates. The Turkish Republic emerged with Ataturk and a more secular Turkish government.
